On the 14th November it is the 75th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz. To mark this occasion Coventry Council will be holding a community event at the Cathedral on Saturday 14th November. Please see the information below if you are interested in supporting this event.
Blitz 75th Anniversary
Saturday 14 November is a key date in Coventry’s history and this year it marks the 75th anniversary of the Blitz.
The Blitz is embedded into the history and DNA of the city and due to the spirit in which Coventry people dealt with the tragedy of the event, the city has become a powerful symbol worldwide for peace and reconciliation.
To mark the anniversary the Council working with the Cathedral have planned a very special event. On the evening of Saturday 14 November we plan to create a giant Human Chain of Peace and Light in the city centre finishing at the Cathedral. Each person attending will carry a light – by using either their mobile phone or a torch – to symbolise communities joining together in a universal message of remembering the past but looking to the future.
The inspiration for the Human Chain comes from Dresden where a similar event takes place annually and attracts thousands of people from across the country.
We would like as many people as possible to join the chain, and children accompanied by an adult are very welcome too. It would be great to see grandparents, parents and children coming together to mark the anniversary – this may be the last significant anniversary where there are survivors of the Blitz.
There will be some very special guests attending and they will be joining the chain too.
There is no need to book, just turn up to University Square no later than 6.30pm on the night and bring a torch or a mobile phone – candles or other naked flames will not be allowed. Don’t forget this is an outdoor event, so wrap up warm – the event is not expected to last longer than 40 minutes. Everyone who joins the chain will receive a commemorative wristband to wear on the night and keep. This is a real opportunity to be part of something special for the 75th anniversary.
