A belated welcome back

Welcome back after half term – I hope that you all had a relaxing break with the children and had a chance to recharge your batteries. We have had a great start to the term and the children have come back focused an ready to learn.

This next half term is very short (4 weeks and 4 days) but we have a lot of activities packed in for the children. As I am sure you are aware we will be holding a cake sale in school tomorrow in order raise money for Birmingham’s Children Hospital – donations of cakes are welcome and if you can send your child with a small amount of money then please do.

Next week on the 7th March it is World Book Day and the PTA will be running an event encouraging all children to dress as a character from their favourite book – a letter will be sent out tomorrow. As part of this day there will be an assembly (where there will be a prize for the best dressed characters) at 9.10am which we be open to all parents followed by a coffee morning in the staff room afterwards.

Thanks for your ongoing support.

A story about Maths Week

Below is a fantastic piece of writing which came about as a result of Maths Week. The author, Hardeep Purewal, worked independently at home to create this wonderful story and I have included an extract below for you to read.

Aside

Dear Parents/Carers,

A brief update to say that, as you may have noticed, teams of parents (led by the PTA) have been carrying out road safety surveys – these will continue to take place over the next two days and will hopefully lead to action from the council. I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their support in trying to make the issue of crossing safer at Park Hill.

On a separate note the vicar at St Andrews (Greg Smith) has organised a fun morning at the the church on the 18th February – the theme is Dr Who and there will be lots of fun events taking place. A place for the morning is £2 and can be booked via: Rebecca Martin: beccamartin@talktalk.net or 76461508

Thanks

Steve Taylor

Teacher Training Tomorrow and Maths Week

Dear Parents/Carers,

The past week has been a whirl wind of activity because of Maths Week. It has been fantastic to see so many children within our school enthused and inspired by Maths. We have had a range of volunteers in to run initiatives and our own staff have worked incredibly hard to make the whole week a success. The response of pupils to the Argos Challenge has been excellent and it is really positive to see so much family learning taking place with such tremendous outcomes. As I am sure you are already aware, the whole week has been thought out, organised and run by Rebecca Bollands – thanks go to her for the outstanding work she has done.

On a separate note we were able to appoint the new phase leader for Y3/4 yesterday. We have managed to secure an outstanding candidate who will motivate pupils within their class and lead the phase to a high standard. I will write to you next week to provide further details along with their name.

Please may I remind you that tomorrow is teacher training day. We will be focussing on moderation of the new marking policy and as a staff attending a presentation by Sir John Jones linked to education.

On a final note – if you are able to sign up to help the PTA  with the road safety campaign on the 13th or 14th February then please do (child care facilities will be available).

Have a great weekend

Maths Week has begun!

Today saw the start of Maths Week with a range of activities including:

  • Puzzle Challenge Day – all pupils have had the opportunity to spend an hour in the hall working on problem solving in collaborative groups.
  • Baking – estimating and weighing ingredients.
  • Working with other children across the school to follow Maths trails.
  • Each class is working towards calculating various items for a whole school cinema afternoon.
  • Many other activities that put Maths in to context and help engage the children.

At the end of the day a family Puzzle Challenge took place in the hall – the turn out was excellent. This event was paid for by the PTA so thanks go to all parents who have spent money at the Summer or Christmas Fayre.

As a school we have been massively impressed by the Maths work the children have brought in to school – below are examples of some of the creative initiatives the pupils have been up to.ImageImageImage
